Course Overview

This presentation will describe dental caries as an infectious, transmissible disease that can be prevented if appropriate, professional intervention occurs at an earlier age than has traditionally been practiced. Risk factors for the development of dental caries, transmission of cariogenic bacteria, anticipatory guidance programs for infants and toddlers, current professional guidelines regarding the first dental visit, components of prevention plans, clinical evaluation techniques, oral habits, and common oral findings in these age groups will be discussed.

Course Objectives

At the completion of the course participants will be able to:

  • Explain the rationale for the first dental examination to occur by one year of age
  • Describe appropriate oral hygiene and preventative procedures for infants and toddlers
  • Identify common oral pathologic conditions in young children
  • Describe the effects of common oral habits on the occlusion of young children and determine appropriate timing for various interventions.
