A rapidly growing segment of our population consists of medically compromised patients. The number of such patients seeking and needing dental care is increasing. This program will review and update oral health providers on best practices for care of the medically compromised patient.
Emphasis will be placed on common chronic systemic diseases such as Hypertension, Diabetes, Hypothyroidism, Arthritis, Asthma, Liver disease as well as on patients who may be undergoing Renal dialysis or Cancer chemotherapy.
The presenter will review current management of these chronic systemic conditions, and discuss the significance in dental patient management.
At the completion of the course participants will be able to:
- Identify the medically compromised patient
- Identify relationships between oral and general health involving most organ systems
- Recognize oral manifestations of chronic systemic diseases
- Identify and manage complications and adverse effects potentially associated with procedures and drugs used in dentistry
- Formulate a treatment plan that is safe and compatible with a patient’s medical status
