Understanding the Basics of Surgical and Restorative Dental Implant Therapy
Friday, April 27, 2012 - Saturday, April 28, 2012
This two-day course will consist of a combination of lecture and hands-on sessions introducing participants to the basics of the surgical placement and restoration of dental implants. This course will emphasize achieving optimal patient care through treatment planning with the entire dental team. The participant will learn about the steps necessary for thorough pre-operative clinical evaluation of implant sites. Emphasis will be on criteria for soft and hard tissue evaluation to help practitioners aim for optimal functional and esthetic outcomes, as well as sound decision making to help the general practitioner understand the fundamentals of implant therapy. This course will explain the basics of implant surgical techniques and demonstrate them on pig jaw mandibles in the simulation lab. Potential surgical complications and methods of avoidance will also be presented. Course participants will learn about treatment planning implant-supported restorations for partially endentulous patients. The didactic portion of the course will focus on creating surgical guides for use in dental implant surgery, and dental implant placement on educational models and pig jaws. Appropriate implant and abutment selection will be presented as well as indications for different prosthetic restorations (i.e., screw-retained vs. cement-retained). The hands-on component of this course will consist of dental implant placement utilizing a surgical guide and implant impressions. Participants are encouraged to bring their cases from private practice for discussion.
At the completion of the course participants will be able to:
- Place implants in pig jaws and on sawbone casts with a surgical guide
- Fabricate a surgical guide in-office
- Make impressions for implant-supported restorations
- Treatment-plan for single and mutltiple-tooth partially endentulous implant cases
- Identify alternative solutions for simple and complex implant cases
- Improve communications with laboratories for more predictable outcomes
