Course Overview

This newly structured, four-day interactive seminar, held at one of the largest medical examiners offices in the country, will allow participants of all levels of knowledge and experience to interact with many forensic science disciplines.

Days 1 & 2 (Overview Course) includes an Introduction to Forensic Odontology (identification, mass disaster, WinID computer program, and bitemark case management), Forensic Anthropology and Toxicology. On Day two participants will view Forensic Autopsies (pathology/odontology) and the Anthropology Laboratories. The afternoon will concentrate on Investigation of Death (cause and manner) and Human Abuse Cases.

Days 3 & 4 (Advanced Training Course) is designed for those that have completed Days 1 & 2 or those with previous forensic odontology knowledge and/or experience. Includes hands-on experience with WinID computer system, Dexis Digital Radiography System, NOMAD™ X-Ray unit, Advances in Forensic Odontology, a Hands-On Photography Session, and Actual Work-up of Unidentified Human Remains, a Mock Mass Disaster, and a Bitemark Exercise. Participants of Days 3 & 4 are to bring study models of their own teeth and a digital camera (SLR preferred).

Course Objectives

At the completion of the course participants will be able to:

  • Compare antemortem and postmortem dental records in the identification of human remains
  • Understand the other forensic science disciplines
  • Be familiar with the dental response to a mass casualty situation
  • Understand recognition, preservation, analysis and documentation of bitemark evidence
  • Understand crime scene investigation, including laboratory procedures, evidence collection, and presentation
  • Be familiar with cause and manner of death
  • Identify principles used in age, sex, and race determination of skeletal remains
  • Gain awareness of human abuse
  • Be familiar with new research in Forensic Odontology
  • Understand the role of photography

If you choose to pay for a continuing education course by check, please note that the check must be received by UDM within ten (10) days of registration. If the check is not received within ten (10) days of registration, we will assume that you are no longer interested in the course and will remove you from the course roster and you will forfeit your held seat. If you register less than ten (10) days prior to the start of a course, payment will be accepted up to the course start time. Registration Policy

For your convenience you may register up until 3:00 p.m. on the day prior to the start of the course with no additional charge. An additional non-refundable fee of $20 dollars per person, per course will be assessed to any registrations received after 3:00 p.m. the day prior to a course or to any same day or walk in registrations.

Refund and Cancellation Policy

Unless otherwise posted, a full refund less $25 will be granted if notification of cancellation is received by the Institute for Advanced Continuing Dental Education office two weeks (14 or more days) prior to the start of the course. If a cancellation is received less than two weeks (13 or less days) prior to the start of a hands-on course, no refund will be granted. Refunds cannot be given for same any day cancellations or no-shows.
