Risk Management Consult: When Doctors Don't Agree (LE108-0310)
Wednesday, March 10, 2010
Presenter(s)
Daniel Shirey, JDTheodore Passineau, JD
Course Overview
A common liability risk factor in the dental profession arises out of criticism of the work done by other dental providers, or from miscommunication among various members of the healthcare team. A review of closed professional liability claims finds that an element of professional criticism is present in at least 25 percent of cases.
This program has been developed to help dentists differentiate between legitimate concerns about clinical competency and the various causes that may sometimes hamper acceptable outcomes for the patient. Communication issues that may threaten the doctor-patient relationship will also be discussed.
Course Objectives
At the completion of the course participants will be able to:
- Formalize ways in which the doctor-patient relationship is initiated/terminated.
- Systematize communication processes with other dentists.
- Develop patient-focused strategies to prevent/resolve professional differences of opinion.
- Teach members of the dental team to communicate without criticism of other dentists.
- Discuss evolving regulatory and case law issues
