Course Overview

Recent epidemiologic and biologic evidence has shown a significant relationship between periodontal disease and various systemic diseases. This course is designed to provide an update of current information regarding the relationship of periodontal disease to diabetes, cardiovascular disease and pre-term low birth weight. Evidence linking common mechanisms between the diseases will be discussed.

Course Objectives

At the completion of the course participants will be able to:

  • Describe the relationship between periodontal disease and diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and pre-term low birth weight
  • Describe the common mechanisms between periodontal disease and diabetes
  • Describe the common mechanisms between periodontal disease and cardiovascular disease
  • Describe the common mechanisms between periodontal disease and preterm low birth weight
