Herbal/Nutritional Supplements and the Dental Practice
Wednesday, April 6, 2011
PresentersSanjay Chand, MBBS, MD
An estimated 50,000 dietary supplements are available to the consumer in the United States and nearly 70 % of people who use these supplements do not discuss their use with their healthcare providers. Given the prevalence of supplement use among patients, the potential drug interactions and side effects of dietary supplements warrant consideration in dental practice. While some herbal and dietary supplements may be safe and effective, their pharmacological activity may interfere with medication used for oral health care. Patients and healthcare providers alike are sometimes oblivious to the effects of these supplements and their drug interactions and side effects.
At present, there is a lack of credible information on herbal/dietary supplements and their potential impact to oral health and dental patient management. This course aims to bridge the gap, providing oral health care providers an overview on this emerging area.
At the completion of the course participants will be able to:
- Inquire about a patients dietary supplement use and assess any risk that the supplement may pose for the patient
- Evaluate potential side effects of the herbal preparation and their impact on oral health
- Assess potential Herbal/Supplement–Dental Drug Interactions
- Assess whether the herbal product is free of contamination from compounds such as heavy metals or other pharmacologically active substances.
