Preventive Strategies: Fluorides and Antimicrobial Rinses

..:: ABC ::..

Saturday, July 21, 2012

Durinda Mattana, RDH, BSDH, MS,

Course Overview

This course will provide current information on the safe and effective use of over-the-counter (OTC) and prescription fluorides and antimicrobial agents. As oral health professionals we know that the use of fluoride in a variety of ways is one of the most effective prevention measures and clinical interventions we can utilize. Antimicrobial agents can also be an effective adjunct to mechanical methods. Based on the most recent and available evidence, this course will update the clinician on current fluoride guidelines, new products, and the effective use of professional and OTC fluoride and antimicrobial rinses and irrigation.

Course Objectives

At the completion of the course participants will be able to:

  • Choose appropriate professional and OTC fluoride therapies based on patients’ caries risk assessment
  • Compare and contrast various fluoride home products (OTC and Rx)
  • Design a fluoride prevention plan for an individual patient
  • Be familiar with scientific evidence regarding antimicrobial agents and oral irrigation
