Friday, March 28, 2014
PresenterTakako Imai Tanaka, DDS, FDS RCSEd
Samson Ng, BSc(Pharm), DMD, MSc, FRCD(C), FDS RCSEd
This course prepares participants with advanced knowledge of assessment and management of orofacial pain caused by various pathological conditions: from oral mucosal diseases to temporomandibular disorders (TMD). There is much confusion in the field, particularly in the non-odontogenic sources of pain. For safe and effective dental practice, it is important for oral health care providers to understand the complexity of pain in the head and neck regions and be able to assess the condition and formulate appropriate differential diagnoses. Accurate head & neck examination of soft/hard tissue along with interpretation of imaging studies will be presented. Participants will learn from oral medicine/oral pathology experts who present the latest scientific evidence in the field. This course will engage participants through interactive, case-based presentation.
At the completion of the course participants will be able to:
• Obtain relevant information necessary to distinguish differences between odontogenic pain and non-odonogenic sources of pain.
• Conduct appropriate head and neck /TMJ examination.
• Formulate appropriate lists of differential diagnosis of the orofacial lesions and TMD.
• Know available options to manage orofacial pain based on currently available scientific evidence.
• Engage in a multi-disciplinary approach to chronic orofacial pain.
