The Art of Complete Dentistry – Predictable Esthetics
Friday, July 12, 2013
PresenterNeeraj Khanna, DDS
The clinical practice of dentistry has evolved in order to bring us better materials, treatment choices, and outcomes for our patients. Although these advancements have given the clinician more success, the fundamentals of clinical practice have not changed. One of these fundamentals is predictable esthetics. Predictable esthetics is achieved through establishing 1) perfect occlusion, the harmonious relationship between the mandibular joints, muscles, and teeth, 2) the upper central incisal edge position, and 3) the length to width ratio of the upper central incisors. These principles are integral to the art of complete dentistry, and must be included in the practitioner’s treatment planning process. Truly, the very goal of using these principles is to have consistent predictable results, thereby making the practice of dentistry less stressful and more rewarding. This discussion will cover these three principles and the importance of communication between the restorative dentist and all specialists involved, and how they both can deliver predictable results to our patients.
The concept of complete dentistry requires that the clinician become a physician of the mastacatory system. This involves having a clear understanding of stable joints, muscles, and occlusion. With today’s esthetically conscious patient there is more demand on us to perform and achieve these new esthetic results.
At the completion of the course participants will be able to:
•Understand the significance and role the TMJ plays in complete dentistry
• Discribe the importance of mounted models in C.R.
• Identify which muscles are important to understand “complete dentistry”
•Understand what the envelope of function is and how it relates to occlusion
• Perform a “complete” exam effectively
• Understand when and what type of digital photos to take
• Be more familuar with centuries-old concept of the golden proportions
• Identify the length to width ratio’s in establishing proper incisal edge position
•Have better communication skills with a periodontist, orthodontist, andlaboratory technicians to achieve excellent predictable results
•Perform Step by Step process of treatment planning in 2-D, and 3-D
