The Restorative Dental Hygienist: A Sponsored Research Pilot Program to Evaluate the Impact of an Alternative Workforce Model Relative to the Current National Discussion

Two strategies identified in the Principles, Competencies, and Curriculum for Educating Dental Therapists Report of the American Association of Public Health Dentistry Panel (2011) for reducing oral health disparities state, “1) include dental care or expand it in community health centers and federally qualified health centers and 2) educate and deploy new types of dental workforce providers that can reach groups not presently served in locations where they live”. To address these strategies, the University of Detroit Mercy School of Dentistry and the University of Michigan School of Dentistry are currently developing a pilot restorative dental hygiene program to be implemented by the University of Detroit Mercy preparing baccalaureate (BS) degree dental hygienists to provide assessment, preventive/therapeutic, and restorative (including the preparation of hard tissue tooth structure, packing and carving of amalgam, and placement of composite) services to underserved populations in health profession shortage areas (HPSA) under the direct supervision of a dentist. The purpose of this course is to share components of the collaborative pilot program development process. It is anticipated that sharing the pilot restorative post BS degree dental hygiene program components will create an awareness of an educational model aimed at preparing an alternative workforce provider who may possibly be involved in future expansion of dental care in HPSA community or federally qualified health centers under the direct supervision of the dentist. Phase two of the research project will include data obtained as specified in the program evaluation plan. This data will be shared in the future once the pilot program is completed.
At the completion of the course, participants will be able to gain knowledge of:
- Intended outcomes of the pilot program
- Competencies to be attained upon completion of the pilot program
- The pilot restorative dental hygiene curriculum
- Pilot program structure including a combination of classroom/web enhanced experiences, simulation, and interdisciplinary patient care experiences with members of the dental care team in the dental school setting
- The research pilot program evaluation plan
