Local Anesthesia Administration for Dental Hygienists: An Online, Lecture and Hands-On Program

School of Dentistry Faculty will facilitate clinical hands-on sessions.
Through lecture, lab and online study, this course is designed to provide the practicing dental hygienist with basic and current concepts of local anesthetics and pain control and prepare participants for safe and effective administration of local anesthetics. The course will include theory of pain control, medical and dental history considerations, selection of pain control modalities, anatomy, neurophysiology, pharmacology of local anesthesia, pharmacology of vasoconstrictors, psychological aspects of pain control, local and systemic complications, techniques of maxillary anesthesia, techniques of mandibular anesthesia, infection control, and management local anesthesia medical emergencies.
Day 1 - Lecture Session
The lecture session includes: anatomical considerations, local and systemic complications, medical emergencies arising from local anesthesia administration, pharmacology of local anesthetics and vasoconstrictors, neurophysiology, basic armamentarium, and infection control. There will be a laboratory session in which participants work with local anesthesia armamentarium and become familiar with grasp, technique, and positioning. Day 2 will include lecture sessions on maxillary, mandibular, and supplemental injection techniques.
Days 2 and 3 - Hands-on Clinical Sessions
On Day 2 participants will work in pairs practicing maxillary and mandibular injection techniques on each other. Participants will be taught in the School of Dentistry Clinic under the supervision of School of Dentistry dental faculty. After practice with feedback, participants will be evaluated with additional feedback. On Day 3 participants will complete a third experience with each type of injection that includes a skills assessment. Injections include: ASA, MSA, PSA, infraorbital, long buccal, IAN/L, GP, NP, LB, and Mental.
- A personal copy of Handbook of Local Anesthesia, Stanley F. Malamed, 5th edition, Mosby, 2004, (ISBN #0-323-02449-1). An optional instructional DVD is available
- Completion of all online learning modules according to an assigned schedule
- Current Health Care Provider CPR certification
- A current Registered Dental Hygienist license
A complete list of the course objectives will be provided in a course syllabus. Once the participant registers for the course a packet of information will be sent including the syllabus and a medical history form. Directions for completing the online self-study portion of the course will be mailed approximately four weeks before the course.

8:00 AM to 5:00 PM each day; Registration table opens half an hour before the course begins.
This course is approved by the Michigan Department of Consumer and Industry, approval # 2002DHLA02. Upon completion, all participants will be prepared to take the State of Michigan written credentialing examination (NERB) for local anesthesia.

For your convenience you may register up until 3:00pm on the day prior to the start of the course with no additional charge. An additional non-refundable fee of $20 dollars per person, per course will be assessed to any registrations received after 3:00pm the day prior to a course or to any same day or walk in registrations.
There will be a $100 administration fee assessed for cancellation or rescheduling of the Local Anesthesia Administration for Dental Hygienists course, once the participant has registered in a lecture and laboratory session.
