Clinical Dental Hygiene Admission

Twenty -five students are admitted into the professional phase of the Dental Hygiene Program in May of each year. Students who are in the process of completing the prerequisite, either at the University of Detroit Mercy or another university, college or community college, may compete for admission to the Dental Hygiene Program.

Deadline for applications into the Clinical Dental Hygiene Program is February 1st for the following incoming year.

The UDM Clinical Dental Hygiene Program does not keep a waiting list.  Admission is competitive and starts anew each year based on the most qualified candidates.

The final selection of 25 qualified students is based on the admissions score computed on the "Admissions Rating Form".  A minimum College GPA of 2.7 or better is expected in overall GPA, Science GPA and Pre-requisite GPA.  Click for complete "Admissions Policies" information.

Admission is competitive.

After acceptance into the Clinical phase of the Dental Hygiene Program, students begin a full two-year, six semester curriculum.

Classes/Clinics are held Monday - Friday from 8 -5 pm. beginning in May of your entry year.

The Program is highly clinically oriented and interdisciplinary (both Dental and Dental Hygiene students take some of the same courses together).

INTERDISCIPLINARY COURSES

The dental hygiene program at the University of Detroit Mercy is within the School of Dentistry. Therefore, students gain exposure to all aspects of dental hygiene and dentistry. The curriculum consists of approximately 20 percent interdisciplinary courses, that is, courses that combine both dental and dental hygiene students. This combined coursework allows students to begin collaborative and collegial interaction early and throughout their education. Upon entering the clinical phase of their education, dental and dental hygiene students work together to provide assessment, diagnoses, and treatment for their patient families.

CLINICAL ROTATIONS

A strong component of the Clinical Dental Hygiene Program is the service the School of Dentistry delivers to the outside community.  Part of the school's mission is " … to provide quality dental care to our patients and to serve as a source of information and education to the community".  The main objective is the provision of care to the underserved in the city of Detroit.

Dental Hygiene students provide dental hygiene care at various external sites treating patients that are medically, mentally, emotionally, and periodontally compromised:

University Health Center (Detroit Receiving Hospital)

John D. Dingell VA Medical Center

Thea Bowman Community Health Center

St. John Van Elslander Family Center

Additional Activities in the City of Detroit include:

  • HeadStart screenings
  • Elementary school dental health education presentations
  • Special needs population dental health education presentations
  • Nursing homes (5 locations)
