After
acceptance into the Clinical phase of the Dental Hygiene Program,
students begin a full two-year, six semester curriculum.
Classes/Clinics
are held Monday - Friday from 8 -5 pm. beginning in May of your entry
year.
The Program is highly
clinically oriented and interdisciplinary (both Dental and Dental
Hygiene students take some of the same courses together).
The dental hygiene program at the University
of Detroit Mercy is within the School of Dentistry. Therefore, students
gain exposure to all aspects of dental hygiene and dentistry. The
curriculum consists of approximately 20 percent interdisciplinary
courses, that is, courses that combine both dental and dental hygiene
students. This combined coursework allows students to begin
collaborative and collegial interaction early and throughout their
education. Upon entering the clinical phase of their education, dental
and dental hygiene students work together to provide assessment,
diagnoses, and treatment for their patient families.
A strong component of the Clinical Dental Hygiene Program is the service the School of Dentistry delivers to the outside community. Part of the school's mission is " … to provide quality dental care to our patients and to serve as a source of information and education to the community". The main objective is the provision of care to the underserved in the city of Detroit.
Dental Hygiene students provide dental hygiene care at various external sites treating patients that are medically, mentally, emotionally, and periodontally compromised:
