Office of Multicultural Affairs

The University of Detroit Mercy School of Dentistry focused efforts to facilitate the entry and retention for students from underrepresented and disadvantaged backgrounds by creating the Office of Multicultural Affairs in 1995.

Located in a community designated as a dental healthcare professional shortage area and a medically underserved area, the School of Dentistry takes pride in our extensive history of providing a quality dental education.  Understanding that providing diversity within the student body promotes a well rounded dental professional, we continue to make strides toward making our student body more reflective of the national patient population.
Through our commitment to serve the underserved, the Office of Multicultural Affairs aims to address the shortage of dentists from underrepresented and disadvantaged backgrounds.   Literature indicates that there is a likelihood of underserved populations gaining access to care if there are an increased number of minority providers. Entry into the health professions by underrepresented minorities, at least in proportion to their number in society, will help to alleviate the health care provider shortages areas.
