Research Resources
The Department chairperson is a faculty member's first contact
for research interest. The Department chairperson will have an
overview of the active research in the department and School as
well as know the specific research interests of various faculty
present in the different departments. It is important for the
Department chairperson to know each faculty members research
interests and be part of the planning and allocation of resources
to any research plan. Furthermore, the Department chairperson can
investigate and help form collaborative research efforts among the
various departments. In addition, the Director of Research should
also be involved in discussions with the faculty person and
department chairperson.

(OSPRA)
http://www.udmercy.edu/ospra/
The website for the Office of Sponsored Projects and Research
Administration is dedicated to facilitating the process of
attracting funding for research and special projects to the
University of Detroit Mercy which will assist the institution in
fulfilling its mission of providing excellent student-centered
undergraduate and graduate education in an urban context.
The pages of this website were produced for the benefit of the
faculty and administration of the University of Detroit Mercy. In
general, the intention is to provide links to various sources of
funding, search engines to help locate funding opportunities, the
University's policies, procedures and practices related to
research, and aids for researchers that have been produced by the
OSPRA.
The UDM Fact Sheet and the Institutional Review Board links are
especially important for obtaining research funding. Other links on

http://www.nih.gov/
NIH is the steward of medical and behavioral research for the
Nation. Its mission is science in pursuit of fundamental knowledge
about the nature and behavior of living systems and the application
of that knowledge to extend healthy life and reduce the burdens of
illness and disability. The goals of the agency are as follows: 1)
foster fundamental creative discoveries, innovative research
strategies, and their applications as a basis to advance
significantly the Nation's capacity to protect and improve health;
2) develop, maintain, and renew scientific human and physical
resources that will assure the Nation's capability to prevent
disease; 3) expand the knowledge base in medical and associated
sciences in order to enhance the Nation's economic well-being and
ensure a continued high return on the public investment in
research; and 4) exemplify and promote the highest level of
scientific integrity, public accountability, and social
responsibility in the conduct of science.
In realizing these goals, the NIH provides leadership and
direction to programs designed to improve the health of the Nation
by conducting and supporting research: in the causes, diagnosis,
prevention, and cure of human diseases; in the processes of human
growth and development; in the biological effects of environmental
contaminants; in the understanding of mental, addictive and
physical disorders; in directing programs for the collection,
dissemination, and exchange of information in medicine and health,
including the development and support of medical libraries and the
training of medical librarians and other health information
specialists.

(NIDCR)
http://www.nidcr.nih.gov/
The mission of the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial
Research (NIDCR) is to promote the general health of the American
people by improving their oral, dental and craniofacial health.
Through the conduct and support of research and the training of
researchers, the NIDCR aims to promote health, prevent diseases and
conditions, and develop new diagnostics and therapeutics.
Research Grant Programs of the NIDCR/NIH
- RO1: Research Project Grant Program. The Research
Project (R01) grant is a 3-5 year award designed to support a
research project designed and implemented by one independent
investigator.
- R03: Small Grant Program. This program provides limited
short-term funds for pilot studies, secondary analysis of data,
small research projects, or development of new research
methodology.
- R15: Academic Research Enhancement Award (AREA). AREA
grants support research projects in conducted by faculty in health
professional schools, including dental schools, and other academic
institutions that traditionally do not receive NIH research grant
funds.
- R21: Exploratory/Developmental Research Grant Award.
This award is intended to encourage new, exploratory and
developmental research projects by providing support for the early
stages of their development.
7) Research Design and Interpretation course (DRD 800)
This course is designed to introduce foundation knowledge on
various aspects of research. The course is for UDMSD predoctoral
students, graduate students, and faculty. It is offered in the
summer term. The primary emphasis is designing research projects
and preparation of proposals. However, literature review, data
analysis and presentation of results will also be discussed.
