Individual Counseling Services

Your dental school experience can be a time of great excitement, challenge and commitment.  It is an opportunity to make academic and career decisions, meet new individuals from around the world and personally grow as an individual and professional community member.  As a college student in a professional program you may encounter a great number of stressful situation and experiences involving your academics, family, relationships and social life.  The counseling services are available to help you understand and cope with issues such as:

  • Academic performance
  • Stress/Anger management
  • Motivation
  • Self-Esteem/Self-Respect
  • Relationship building
  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • Loss and life adjustments

These services are provided by our on-site counselor in an ethical and confidential manner and is usually provided in a short term solution-focused model.  Individual therapy involves meeting with our counsel one-on-one.  Individual therapy sessions may focus on any of the above issues or perhaps ones which are more pressing to the student.

You may receive a referral to an outside clinic, community mental health agency, other UDM resources or private practitioner if the counselor determines that our program might not be able to meet your individual needs.  In all cases, we work with you to determine the best approach to address your concerns.  If a referral is given, we will follow up with you to ensure that you are able to effectively connect with the outside service.
