Ashok Balasundaram, BDS, MSD, MS, FDSRCS (UK), Adjunct Assistant Professor in the Department of Diagnostic Sciences, earned a BDS degree from Saveetha Dental College and Hospital and an MDS in Oral Pathology from Ragas Dental College, both in Tamil Nadu, India. He completed the MS degree program in Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology at the University of North Carolina and is a Diplomate of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology. Dr. Balasundaram teaches Radiology in didactic and clinical courses for dental and dental hygiene students. He has conducted research in volumetric computed tomography and is currently involved in several research projects at the dental school. | Gary Berman, DDS, Consulting Forensic Odontologist, Wayne and Oakland County Medical Examiners' Offices, maintains a private practice in Belleville, MI. He also received a MS in Education from the University of New Orleans. Dr. Braud served as a dental officer for two years in the United States Navy. Ms. Coleman is the continuing education coordinator for both the Local Anesthesia and Nitrous Oxide Sedation courses for practicing hygienists. Her courses in Pain and Anxiety Control have been recognized and implemented nationally by states with recent implementation or pending legislation for legalization of these skills. | W.Choong Foong, BSc, PhD, Associate Professor, Department of Biomedical Sciences, earned his B.Sc. (Hons.) and PhD in Pharmacology from the School of Pharmacy, Portsmouth University (England). He then joined the Dalhousie University for two consecutive Post-Doctoral Fellowships in Biopharmaceutics and Dental Materials. He currently teaches graduate and undergraduate pharmacology and therapeutics in the nursing, dental, and dental hygiene programs. Dr. Foong also participates in clinical teaching, providing chair-side pharmacology and therapeutics instruction. | William Forbes, DDS, Associate Professor in the Biomedical Science Department, earned his DDS from the University of Michigan. Dr. Forbes is Course Director for the Gross Anatomy and Head and Neck Anatomy courses for dental and dental hygiene students as well as the graduate residents. In addition, he is an adjunct professor in the anatomy courses at the Wayne State University Medical School. Prior to joining the UDM faculty, Dr. Forbes practiced general dentistry in a small town in Dover-Foxcroft, Maine for 27 years and taught part-time as adjunct faculty at the University of Maine. | James Geist, D.D.S., M.S., Professor and Chairman of the Department of Diagnostic Sciences, earned a D.D.S. from the University of Illinois and a MS in Oral Pathology from Indiana University. He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology and a Fellow of the American Academy of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology. Dr. Geist teaches courses in pathology, oral medicine and oral radiology. His research interests include the diagnostic efficacy of imaging systems and the effectiveness of educational techniques. Dr. Gibson-Howell practices dental hygiene Dental Faculty Practice. She earned her EdD (2002) in Education, Curriculum and Instruction, from West Virginia University, her MSEd (1987) in Educational Administration from University of Dayton her BS (1982) in Dental Auxiliary Teacher Education from The University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill, and her AS in Dental Hygiene (1972) from West Liberty State College, West Virginia. Prior to her current faculty position, she was an Associate Professor at West Virginia University School of Dentistry and an Associate Professor at Rhodes State College. Domestic violence is a topic of passion because she is a survivor of adult violence and abuse in her life. She is currently conducted research regarding what domestic violence issues are included in dental school curricula and does education assist the practitioner is identification and intervention. Her goal in talking with dental professionals is awareness of the issue, being able to communicate with the victim, refer, document and/or report. It is important because you may save a life. | Alan R. Grodin, DDS, Private Practitioner, earned his DDS degree from the University of Detroit School of Dentistry and has been in private practice for over 20 years. He went from doing absolutely no veneers in 2001, to the present, where he performs many large veneer cases on a regular basis. In January of 2004, Dr. Grodin and his staff were awarded "Office of the Month" from Dental Economics Magazine. He has taken his practice to the next level, both clinically and financially by implementing cosmetic dentistry options for his patients. | Dincer Gurun, DMD, DDS, Interim Chairperson, Department of Restorative Dentistry, Clinical Assistant Professor, and Co-Coordinator UDM Implant Program earned his DMD and Prosthodontic training at the University of Istanbul, Turkey. He remained on faculty at the University as an assistant instructor while also maintaining a private practice. Dr. Gurun completed a fellowship program in Prosthodontics at the | University of Florida, College of Dentistry. He spent four years teaching as a full time faculty member there in the Department of Prosthetic Dentistry, also maintaining his faculty practice. Dr. Gurun joined the UDM Prosthodontic Department in 2001 and also received his U.S. DDS degree from the same institution. He has published both abstracts and articles mostly related to clinical techniques. He is also active in a number of professional associations. Anne Hague, RDH, MS, PhD, RD, Assistant Professor of Dental Hygiene, Ohio State University College of Dentistry, directs courses in nutrition and research, and provides clinical instruction for dental and dental hygiene students. She currently practices dental hygiene in Dental Faculty Practice and is a registered dietitian. Dr. Hague received her PhD (2003) in Food and Nutrition Sciences from The University of Maine, her M.S. (1989) and B.S. (1986) in Human Nutrition from the University of New Hampshire, and her A.S. (1982) in Dental Hygiene from the New Hampshire Technical Institute. Prior to her current faculty position, Dr. Hague was an Assistant Professor of Dental Hygiene at the University of New England where she directed courses in nutrition, dental radiology, senior seminar, and dental materials. She has presented continuing education courses on various topics related to nutrition and oral health, guest lectured for numerous professional organizations, conducted research in the area of eating disorders and nutrition education and has published numerous peer-reviewed articles. | Kenneth L. Hillenburg, DDS, MS, Clinical Associate Professor and Director of Predoctoral Periodontics, earned a DDS degree from the Facultad de Odontología, Universidad de Panamá and also from the University of Detroit . He also received his MS in Periodontics from the University of Michigan and is a Diplomate of the American Academy of Periodontology. He has taught predoctoral periodontics at the University of Detroit Mercy since 1985. Dr. Hillenburg currently serves as chair of the Predoctoral Educators Organization of the American Academy of Periodontology. | Diane Hoelscher, DDS, MS, Associate Professor and Chairperson, Department of Patient Management, received her dental degree from the University of Detroit and a Masters in Healthcare Education from the University of Detroit Mercy. A faculty member at UDM since 1990, she has taught periodontics, operative dentistry, ethics, and, for four years, served as Interim Chairperson of the Department of Operative Restorative Dentistry. Dr. Hoelscher also maintains a part-time private practice and is a member of the ADA, AGD, Academy of Operative Dentistry, IADR/AADR, Omikron Kappa Upsilon and is actively involved in the American Dental Education Association, currently serving on the ADEA Board of Directors. Her research interests include educational methodology and dental materials with an emphasis on esthetic restorative materials. | Shilpa Kolhatkar, DDS, MDS, Clinical Assistant Professor, Department of Periodontology and Dental Hygiene, earned a BDS and MDS from Bangalore University, India, a DDS from the University of Detroit Mercy School of Dentistry and a Certificate in Periodontics from Indiana University School of Dentistry. Dr. Kolhatkar is a Diplomate of the American Board of Periodontology. She is the staff periodontist for the School of Dentistry at the University Health Center in Detroit Receiving Hospital, and maintains a private practice limited to Periodontics and Implants in Troy, Michigan. | Timothy Kosinski, DDS, MAGD, Adjunct Assistant Professor, Department of Restorative Dentistry, maintains a private practice devoted to comprehensive and implant dentistry. He serves on the editorial review board of Reality , the information source for esthetic dentistry. He is a Diplomat of the American board of Oral Implantology/Implant Dentistry, the International Congress of Oral Implantologists and the American Society of Osseointegration. He is a Fellow of the American Academy of Implant Dentistry and received his Mastership in the AGD. Dr. Kosinski has received many honors including Fellowship in the American and International Colleges of Dentists and the Academy of Dentistry Internationale , and is a member of OKU and the Pierre Fauchard Academy. Dr. Kosinski was the University of Detroit Mercy School of Dentistry Alumni Association's "Alumnus of the Year" in 2001. Most recently he was listed in The Best Dentists in America 2004-05. Dr. Kosinski has published over 45 articles on the surgical and prosthetic phases of implant dentistry and was a contributor to the textbook, Principles and Practice of Implant Dentistry. | Michael Linebaugh, DDS, MS, Associate Professor, Department of Prosthodontic Restorative Dentistry, earned his DDS from the University of Detroit and his MS in Prosthodontics from the University of Michigan. He is currently on staff at the Detroit Veterans Hospital Graduate Dental Program and participates in their prosthodontic dental residents. In addition to teaching, Dr. Linebaugh also maintains a private prosthodontic dental practice. | Jill Loewen, RDA, MS, Clinical Assistant Professor and Tobacco Prevention and Treatment Program Coordinator at the University of Detroit Mercy School of Dentistry, earned both a BS degree in Allied Health Education and a MS degree in Career and Technical Education from Ferris State University. She is a former Dental Assisting program educator, a past president of the Michigan Dental Assistants Association, and serves as a board member of the Michigan Dental Foundation. Ms Loewen is a recipient of the MDAA Impact Award, the ADAA Pride Award, has been awarded fellowship status in the American Dental Assistants Association. | Laura Manning-Lee, BS, Adjunct Clinical Instructor, Department of Periodontology and Dental Hygiene, earned her Certificate and Bachelor of Science in Dental Hygiene at the University of Detroit Mercy. She teaches pre-clinical and clinical periodontics to dental hygiene and dental students and lectures on sonic, ultrasonic, and periodontal instrumentation, and most recently emerging technology in the dental office. Ms. Manning-Lee has held a full-time position in a prosthodontic practice for nine years. She's a recent recipient of the "Student National Dental Hygiene Association Faculty Award." She is currently an active member of the ADHA, MDHA, and her local component. She is the Immediate Past President of Sigma Phi Alpha National Dental Hygiene Honor Society. | Beverly A. McClure, RDH, BS, Associate Professor of Clinical Dental Hygiene, Ohio State University College of Dentistry, has taught at The Ohio State University College of Dentistry for over 30 years. She has presented continuing education courses on CPR, autism, soda pop, halitosis, prevention, a review for hygienists returning to private practice, dental sealants and coronal polishing for dental assistants. She is the CPR coordinator for the college. Bev served as a facilitator for the Child Assault Program given in central Ohio in the 1980’s. | Joan McGowan, RDH, PhD, Associate Professor, University of Michigan School of Dentistry | Vinod Miriyala, BDS, MPH, Adjunct Assistant Professor in the Department of Pediatric Dentistry, received a Bachelor of Dental Surgery from Amravathi University in India and a MPH from Ohio State University. Dr. Miriyala holds certificates in Dental Public Health from University of Pittsburgh, Advanced Graduate Study in Pediatric Dentistry from Boston University. He also completed a General Practice Residency, a fellowship in Dental Public Health, and was a Clinical Fellow in Pediatric Dentistry at Ohio State University. | John Molinari, PhD, Professor and Chairperson, Department of Biomedical Sciences, earned a BA from St. Vincent College and a PhD in Microbiology from the University of Pittsburgh School of Dental Medicine. He has published over 300 scientific articles and abstracts in Microbiology and Immunology and is a co-author of the textbook Practical Infection Control in Dentistry. Dr. Molinari has lectured nationally and internationally on topics dealing with infectious diseases and dental asepsis. He also serves as a consultant for hospitals in the Detroit area and serves as a consultant to the ADA. Previously, he was the Project Coordinator for the governmental Health Resources and Services Administration Task Force on AIDS and Dental Education and Chairman of the American Association of Dental Schools Curriculum Advisory Committee on Bloodborne Infectious Diseases. Dr. Molinari is also a consultant to the CDC in the areas of infectious disease and infection control. | Lynne Moseley, DDS, Director of Oral Oncology, Karmanos Cancer Center | Mark T. Murphy, DDS, President, National Lab Network is the former Director of Professional Relations for the Pankey Institute (a not-for-profit foundation) in Key Biscayne Florida and practices general dentistry part time in Rochester, Michigan. He graduated from the University of Detroit School of Dentistry in 1981 and continued teaching Anatomy and Crown and Bridge part time for several years. He has served on the Visiting Faculty of The Pankey Institute for Advanced Dental Education since 1991 and on its Board of Directors and Trustees until taking his current position. Mark has lectured throughout North America on Practice Management, The Philosophy of Dental Practice, Communication, Quality Issues facing Dental Practices and Labs Today, Occlusion, TMD , and Esthetics . | Anthony Neely, DDS, PhD, Diplomate of the American Board of Periodontology, Associate Professor, Department of Periodontology and Dental Hygiene, earned a D.D.S. from the University of Minnesota , M.Dent.Sc. and Certificate in Periodontics from the University of Connecticut and a Ph.D. in Chronic Disease Epidemiology from Yale University. His research interests include longitudinal assessment of periodontal disease and tooth loss and the epidemiology and etiology of periodontal diseases. Other interests include the relationship between systemic diseases such as diabetes and cardiovascular disease and periodontal health. He is also interested in assessing risk factors for periodontal disease in children and adults. Dr. Neely maintains an active clinical practice limited to Periodontics at the University of Detroit-Mercy School of Dentistry performing routine, esthetic and regenerative procedures and placement of dental implants. | Kathleen Neveu, RDH, MS, Clinical Associate Professor and Dental Hygiene Clinic Coordinator, Department of Periodontology and Dental Hygiene, earned a Certificate and BS in Dental Hygiene at the University of Detroit and her MS in Health Care Education at University of Detroit Mercy. | Kathi Shepherd, RDH, MS, Associate Professor, Director of the Dental Hygiene Program, Department of Periodontology and Dental Hygiene, and Director of Outcomes Assessment for the School of Dentistry, earned a Certificate and a BS in Dental Hygiene from the University of Detroit and a MS from the University of Detroit Mercy. Ms. Shepherd teaches clinical dental hygiene, dental hygiene board review, clinical seminar and lectures in periodontal preclinical dental and dental hygiene courses. Her publications and professional presentations focus on both dental education and dental hygiene care. Ms. Shepherd is the recipient of the Outstanding Faculty awards given by students. | Claudine Sordyl, RN, MS, Associate Professor, Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, holds a BSN in Nursing and a MS in Health Services Administration from the University of Detroit Mercy. Ms. Sordyl lectures on medical emergencies in the dental office, physical assessment, basic life support recertification, pain and anxiety control, inhalation and intravenous sedation in oral surgery protocols to both dental and dental hygiene students. Her publications and professional presentations deal with registered nurses in dental education, mock emergency drills, conscious sedation, and dental practice emergency drug kit setups. | Carl Stone, DDS, MA, MBA, MA, Associate Professor, Department of Operative Restorative Dentistry is a registered pharmacist as well as a dentist. He received his Pharmacy degree from Wayne State University and earned his DDS, MA in Education, MBA, and his MA in Economics from the University of Detroit Mercy. He currently teaches Amalgam Restoration and Complete Dentures to the dental students and guest lectures in the Pain and Anxiety course to the dental hygiene students. | Sarah Lelgarde Swart, MM, MLIS, Retired Director of Instructional Technology, holds degrees in education, business, and library and information science. Her expertise is in teaching in a distance education format in health sciences informatics. She recently served as the Director of Instructional Technology for the University of Detroit Mercy. Her consulting company, Comput-Ease Solutions, provides instructional technology support to educators. | Allan Warnick, DDS, Chief Forensic Odontologist, Wayne and Oakland County Medical Examiners Office, earned his degree from the University of Detroit School of Dentistry. Dr. Warnick is a Diplomate of the American Board of Forensic Odontology and a Fellow of the Academy of Forensic Sciences. Dr. Warnick is the Team Leader of the Michigan Dental Association Forensic Dental Identification Team, which has responded to the Northwest Flight #255, Flight #1487, and Comair Flight #3272 airplane disasters. Most recently, he was deployed as part of the NDMS-DMORT team to assist at the World Trade Center. | James Winkler, PhD DDS, Professor and Chairperson, Department of Periodontology and Dental Hygiene, is internationally recognized for his work on HIV. Dr. Winkler received his DDS and PhD in Biological Sciences from the State University of New York at Buffalo and a Certificate in Periodontics from the University of California at San Francisco. Dr. Winkler currently teaches interdisciplinary courses in biological basis to soft tissue disease to both dental and dental hygiene students. His interests include the management of oral manifestations of immunocomprimised patients.
