In today's job market, more options
are available in health care than ever before. The University
of Detroit Mercy can enhance your role as a dental health
professional and open new career opportunities with
either a Certificate in Dental Hygiene from the School
of Dentistry, or a Bachelor's degree from the School
of Dentistry and College
of Liberal Arts and Education.
The dental hygienist
is a licensed member of the health care team. Today,
dental hygienists work as clinicians, educators, administrators,
business managers, researchers and consultants. Graduates
are employed by private practitioners in general dentistry
and the specialties, as well as by hospitals, schools,
public health programs, insurance companies, pharmaceutical
companies and dental equipment supply companies.
Upon completion of
their bachelor's degree, many dental hygienists pursue
graduate studies in order to prepare for a variety of
careers. The Dental Hygiene Division offers several
programs to prepare the dental hygiene student for these
multiple employment settings and levels of responsibility.
Prospective students
may be admitted into any one of the three phases of
dental hygiene programs:
Pre-Dental
Hygiene
Clinical Dental

Since the Dental Hygiene Program
is within the School of Dentistry, students gain exposure
to all aspects of dental hygiene and dentistry.
The curriculum consists of approximately
20 percent interdisciplinary courses, which means that
dental and dental hygiene courses are combined. This
allows students to begin collaborative and collegial
interaction early and throughout their education.
Graduates of the Certificate and
Baccalaureate programs are eligible to take dental hygiene
licensing examinations in any of the 50 states and the
