Outreach & Diversity
Service to the community is an integral component of the University of Detroit Mercy School of Dentistry's mission to develop socially and ethically sensitive dental professionals. It is a value evidenced in the daily activities of the school and one that helps guide in planning for the future.
Community service encompasses a variety of activities such as oral health promotion and education in schools, oral cancer screenings at health fairs, prevention programs targeting certain populations in settings such as nursing homes, and screening and treatment programs such as "Give Kids a Smile" and "MiDoor." While the activities are diverse, the goals are the same—to fill unmet needs in the community through direct patient care, to enable students to help others and to give of themselves, and to provide multicultural experiences to enhance the student’s awareness and sensitivity to a culturally-diverse population.
Service to community is so much more than the activity itself. It is an opportunity for the student to grow and develop into the dental professional the School is proud to graduate.
