Scholarship Assistance

Scholarship opportunities are a great way to help minimize student loan debt. In addition to internal scholarships, reach out to your local community to find additional scholarship opportunities.

The following scholarships have been made possible by generous alumni and friends of the School. Applications are open to current students annually in September via the Office of Student Services and Enrollment Management.

Charles Defever Scholarship

Resident of Michigan at the top of their class in microbiology and bio-medical sciences courses.

Delta Dental Fund

 

DS1

 

Awarded to two DS1 students annually based on pre-dental academic performance and admissions committee recommendations. Available to students demonstrating financial need. Awardee receives scholarship for four years (total of $4,000).

Scholarships awarded to students studying in the School of Dentistry, as identified by the University's Admissions and Financial Aid staff. Pre-dental academic performance and the recommendation of the Admissions Committee determine scholarship awards. Scholarships awarded to United States citizens or permanent residents. Scholarships awarded to students maintaining good academic standing, 2.5, at the University of Detroit Mercy. Scholarships awarded to students demonstrating financial need.

Delmer H. Eichler Scholarship Fund

DS1, DS2, DS3, DS4

Students demonstrating academic or other merit according to the guidelines established by the Dean, as well as financial need. Open to Canadian students.

Dr. Charles J. Cooper Dental Scholarship

DS1, DS2, DS3, DS4

Minority students who have mentored pre-dental applicants and/or participated in recruitment/retention activities for minority students.

Dr. Michelle Ann Kurpakus Wheater Memorial Scholarship

 

D1 & DH1

Recipients must be full-time students studying at University of Detroit Mercy School of Dentistry, as identified by the Office of Registrar.

  • Recipients must be DDS or DH students with a GPA of 3.0 or higher. For D1 & DH1 students, GPA utilized for application for admission to DDS or DH program will be considered.
  • Preference for first-generation students.
  • Students demonstrating financial need, as identified by the Office of Financial Aid through an evaluation of student’s background via application, student account, and socioeconomic indicators available on student record. Priority will be given to students representing a background as low income, educationally or economically disadvantaged.
  • The recipient must engage in research or teaching-related activities (for D1 and DH1 students, previous research experiences at an undergraduate level may be considered).
  • The recipient should exhibit selfless servant leadership and excellence in leadership in an academic setting with dedication to building community between peers and colleagues.
  • Recipients are not expected to pay back this financial assistance, however, when they have the ability at some time in the future, they are encouraged to consider contributing to the Dr. Michelle Ann Kurpakus Wheater Memorial Scholarship. 

Dr. William J. Giovan Memorial Endowed Scholarship

DS 1-4 DH 1-2

Students studying at the University of Detroit Mercy School of Dentistry, as identified by the Office of the Registrar and Financial Aid staff; Students maintaining good academic standing and demonstrating financial need.

E. Ray and Anne E. Stricker Endowed Scholarship

Students demonstrating excellent interpersonal communication skills with patients, colleagues and staff, clinical skills and professional demeanor.

Edward Hoban Memorial Scholarship

DS3, DH2

Students who demonstrate financial need. Third-year dental students or second-year dental hygiene students balancing professional studies and family responsibilities.

Elias Floyd Delta Sigma Delta Scholarship

DS3, DS4

Students belonging to Delta Sigma Delta Fraternity, demonstrating a financial need. Recipient must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident.

Falcon Family Expendable Scholarship

 

D4 & DH2

These funds are to be awarded to students studying in the School of Dentistry, at their graduation awards ceremony. Candidates for these funds must be in good academic standing with the School. Candidates experiencing financial need.

  • Top priority for receipt of these funds will be non-traditional students who have overcome adversity in their lives, particularly during the time of their dental studies.
  • This fund will provide monies to graduating DDS and/or DH students of the University of Detroit Mercy School of Dentistry. Some examples of life-circumstance-challenges that applicants have overcome could be language or cultural barriers, family member death or illness, etc.
  • Recipients are not expected to pay back this financial assistance. However, recipients of the Falcon Family Expendable Scholarship Fund are encouraged to make a contribution to the Fund, when they are fiscally able.

George and Ester Jaruga Endowed Scholarship

  • Third or Fourth year students in DDS program
  • US Citizen
  • Graduate of high school in Michigan or Pennsylvania
  • Demonstrated financial need
  • Experience as a mentor OR with ongoing family responsibility

George Jaruga Endowed Scholarship

 

Up to $2.500 emergency, one-time only scholarships are awarded to students studying in the School of Dentistry, as identified by the School of Dentistry's Financial Aid staff.
Candidates for these funds must be in good academic standing with the School of Dentistry. Candidates for these funds must have financial need that has been exacerbated by emergency factors that were altogether unexpected and impossible for which to plan. The candidates are required to provide written certification of the extraordinary need.

J&J Summer Enrichment Program

 

Preference Given to Michigan Residents (Must be US Citizen); Must be a students of underrepresented minority group(s) in the field of dentistry -- Individuals who identify as Black/African-American, American Indian/Native American/Alaska Native, Latino/Hispanic, Native Hawaiian/Other Pacific Islander, and/or belonging to certain Asian subpopulations (other than Chinese, Filipino, Japanese, Korean, Asian Indian, or Thai); Awarded to student enrolled in the University of Detroit Mercy School of Dentistry Doctor of Dental Surgery Program as identified by the Office of the Registrar and Financial Aid staff; Must demonstrate leadership skills, a commitment to community services and dedication to dentistry.


NOTE: THIS RECIPIENT WILL BE SELECTED BY A COMMITTEE AND WILL RECEIVE THE SCHOLARSHIP AT $20,000 A YEAR FOR FOUR YEARS.

James Sarcheck, D.D.S. Endowment

 

The James Sarcheck, D.D.S Endowment provides financial assistance for a D.D.S. student presentation of clinically relevant finds at national peer-reviewed meetings.

Jeeva Family Expendable Scholarship

 

D1

  • Students are full-time first year dental students, D1 at the School of Dentistry, as identified by the University’s Admissions and Financial Aid staff;
  • Students are in good academic standing at the Dental School;
  • Students demonstrate financial need, as identified by the Office of Financial Aid;

    NOTE: Two students to receive each year - $2,500 each

Kathleen and Donald Vanitvelt Endowed Scholarship

 

D3 & D4

The student must be a US citizen. A resident of the State of Michigan. In good standing with Detroit Mercy Dental. Minimum 3.25 GPA. D3 or D4 Dental student. Student will demonstrate financial need, as identified by the office of financial aid.

Kinra Family Endowed Scholarship

DS3, DS4

Students who are in good academic standing and show interest in endodontics.

Larry Charles Anderson, Ph.D., Endowed Scholarship

 

  • Emergency funds are awarded to students studying in the School of Dentistry, as identified by the School of Dentistry's Financial Aid staff.
  • Candidates for these funds must be in good academic standing with the School of Dentistry.
  • Candidates for these funds must have financial need that has been exacerbated by emergency factors that were altogether unexpected and impossible for which to plan. The candidates are required to provide written verification of the extraordinary need.

Michael J. Frenchi Endowed Scholarship

End of D1, beginning D2  

The donor's preferences are that the recipient of this scholarship:
Be a student in good academic standing at Detroit Mercy Dental
Awarded to a student at the end of D1 - Beginning of D2 year
Be actively involved in academic as well as extra-curricular activities of the School
Distinguish themselves by good works and acts of support for his/her classmates and the School in general. Be actively involved in academic as well as extra-curricular activities of the School. Application Process
Students who wish to apply for the Frenchi Endowed Scholarship will provide the School with:

  • Proof of satisfactory academic standing and active involvement at Detroit Mercy Dental
  • An essay of up to 500 words listing the qualities that they possess making them eligible for the Michael J. Frenchi Endowed Scholarship Fund. The essay should reflect the ideals of respect, selflessness, and integrity.
  • The School will collect this information and select the application materials of the top three candidates for presentation to the Frenchi Family.

    Administration
    Under the direction of the School of Dentistry dean or his/her designee, the School of Dentistry Office of Financial Aid staff administers the Michael J. Frenchi Endowed Scholarship.
  • Detroit Mercy Dental will present the applications of three to five qualified candidates for this scholarship to the Frenchi Family who will choose their preferred candidate

Mosely Dental Scholarship

DS1, DS2, DS3, DS4

Recipient must be full or part time student of African American descent demonstrating financial need. Open to Canadian students.

National Arab American Medical Association Endowed Scholarship

Sherry A. Castle-Boyer Endowed Scholarship for Dental Hygiene

 

Scholarship awarded to a dental hygiene or degree-completion student enrolled at the University of Detroit Mercy School of Dentistry as verified by the Office of the Registrar and Financial Aid staff.

Scholarship awarded to a dental hygiene or degree-completion student in good academic standing with the School of Dentistry.

Scholarship awarded to a dental hygiene or degree completion student who exhibits some or all of the characteristics mentioned in the description below, in demonstrable ways.
Students who receive the Sherry Castle Boyer Award must demonstrate significant initiative to go above and beyond the provision of excellent oral hygiene care. Building on dental hygiene skills and experiences, this student has a broader vision for improving the life of others through the implementation of original ideas and programs

William J. Nicholson Memorial Endowed Scholarship

D3 & D4

  • D3 and D4 students - NON RENEWABLE
  • Graduated from a Michigan high school
  • Lived in Michigan at least 10 years
  • Are U.S. citizens
  • Represent the greatest demonstrated, unmet financial need, with a strong preference for those who have received the least scholarship or other financial aid
  • Are students studying at the University of Detroit Mercy School of Dentistry, as identified by the Office of the Registrar and Financial Aid staff.
  • Are students maintaining good academic standing at the University of Detroit Mercy School of Dentistry.

    *All recipients must be School of Dentistry students in good standing and US citizens or permanent residents, unless otherwise stated in criteria profile.

    Armed Forces

    Armed Forces Health Professions Scholarships  (HPSP)

    The U.S. Armed Forces offer scholarships to dental students that pay tuition, fees, books and a monthly stipend. All are highly competitive programs. The active duty obligation is one year of service for each year of scholarship support with a minimum of three years of active duty service.     Federally Funded Scholarships

    National Health Service Corps (NHSC) Scholarship Program

    Dental students may compete for NHSC scholarships beginning in their sophomore and junior years. The program offers payment of tuition and fees, books, supplies, and equipment and includes a monthly stipend. In exchange, recipients must agree to provide oral health services for a minimum of two years in any underserved community identified by the NHSC as being a critical need area.     Financial Aid For Minority Students

    In addition to the usual sources of financial aid, there are grants or scholarships which have been established to assist underrepresented minority dental students.  For more information, please contact the UDMSOD Office of Diversity and Inclusion at 313-494-6957.

    Minority Dental Student Scholarship

    Students awarded funds under this program may receive up to $2,500 for their second year. Up to 25 awards are made annually. Applications must be obtained from and submitted at UDMSOD. Additional information for application eligibility may be obtained through the American Dental Association

    *Applications and all supporting documentation must be postmarked no later than June 1. Notification of funding decisions will be made after December 31.

    National Institute Of Dental And Craniofacial Research (Nidcr) Short-Term Training Awards

    This program provides underrepresented minority and women dental students an opportunity to obtain research experience during their professional training. Recipients receive a monthly stipend during training periods. Applicants must be enrolled at a U.S. dental school and be a U.S. citizen, a non-citizen national of the U.S., or lawfully admitted for permanent residence.
