Periodontics Admission Policies


Applicants must have a DMD/DDS from a dental education program accredited by the American Dental Association Council on Dental Accreditation or an equivalent international entity.

Applicants must have a U.S. citizenship or permanent residency in the United States of America.

Applicants should have successfully completed part I of the National Board Examination prior to applying for admission and must complete part II before they beginning the program.

Applicants should submit curriculum vitae, photograph, personal statement, and at least three letters of recommendation.  

Advanced Dental Admissions Test (ADAT) is recommended but not required.

Candidates for admission should possess good academic credentials and should demonstrate a definite interest in periodontics.  Priority is given to candidates with a US or Canadian license, but candidates with non-US DDS license are encouraged to apply.

Additional experience beyond dental school including internships, residencies, private practice, etc will strengthen the applicant's credentials. 

Submit a passport size (2"x2") photo with your signature on the back (for identification purposes), and a supplemental non-refundable application fee of $75.00 (U.S. funds), made payable to "UDM School of Dentistry". Payment can be in the form of a money order or certified check. Personal checks will not be accepted and will be returned to you, delaying the processing of your application. Application process through the Postdoctoral Application Support Service program (PASS).

The Department of Periodontology and Dental Hygiene at the University of Detroit Mercy School of Dentistry accepts three students each year into the graduate program. Applications for admissions to the periodontic program will be available in May through ADEA's PASS program.


The application must be completed and returned to PASS by November 2nd of the year preceding your desired registration. The completed PASS application should include all documents requested by PASS. On the PASS web site is a connecting link to the University of Detroit Mercy's periodontic program.
