Periodontics Admission Policies
Requirements
- Applicants must have a D.M.D./D.D.S. from a dental education program accredited by the American Dental Association Council on Dental Accreditation.
- Applicants must have a U.S. citizenship or permanent residency in the United States of America.
- Applicants should have successfully completed part I of the National Board Examination prior to applying for admission and must complete part II before they begin the program.
- Applicants should submit a curriculum vitae, a photograph, a personal statement, and at least three letters of recommendation.
- Advanced Dental Admissions Test (ADAT) is recommended but not required.
- Detroit Mercy Dental is committed to accepting applicants from a broad base of backgrounds. Additional experience beyond dental school, including internships, residencies, private practice, etc. will strengthen the applicant's credentials.
- Once you have submitted your application through PASS, you will receive a link to pay the non-refundable application fee of $75.00 USD and upload a photo of yourself. It may take 48-72 hours for the link to generate. Please do not mail photos or checks. It is important to complete all required actions solely through the Slate portal, as we have fully transitioned to an electronic process.

Application process through the Postdoctoral Application Support Service (PASS) program.
The Department of Periodontology at the University of Detroit Mercy School of Dentistry accepts three students each year into the graduate program. Applications for admissions to the periodontic program will be available in May through ADEA's PASS program.
The application must be completed and returned to PASS by November 2nd of the year preceding your desired registration. The completed PASS application should include all documents requested by PASS. On the PASS website is a connecting link to the University of Detroit Mercy's periodontic program.
